On Thursday, December 3rd, 1998,  Dr. Sambe Duale received recognition as the1998 Outstanding Alumnus Award Recipient at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine Annual Awards Gala, *A Tribute to Commitment* in New Orleans, Lousiana.

The award was presented to him by Scott S. Cowen, President of the Tulane University.

Dr. Sambe Duale received his medical degree from the National University of Zaire (now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo) in 1979. He was awarded a scholarship from the United States Agency for International Development to study at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and received an M.P.H. in International Health and Development in 1985.

Dr.Duale has consulted for the World Health Organization, the World Bank, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and many other other organizations on issues of primary health care, maternal health and child survival, and prevention and control of the human immmunodefiency virus and AIDS.

From 1988 to 1992, Dr. Duale served as Director of the SANRU rural health project for Zaire. During political strife and deteriorating economic and social conditions in Zaire, he molded SANRU into one of the most effective and highly regarded public health networks of its kind in the world.

Before SANRU, he served as Chief medical officer for the Karawa Health Zone Primary Health Care System, with responsibility for a large general hospital and more than 30 satellite health centers serving a population in excess of 300,000.

Currently, he is Research Manager of the U.S. Agency for International Development funded Support for Analysis and Research in Africa (SARA) Project. In this capacity, he
provides technical guidance for planning, conduct, analysis, interpretation and dissemination of SARA activities in support of improved public health policies and
programs in Africa.

His accomplishments in applying the public health knowledge gained while a student in New Orleans to improvements in the health of populations throughout the African Continent make Dr. Sambe Duale an ideal choice as the 1997-1998 Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine Alumnus of the Year.
