Merci,
Votre compatriote,
Dr Wayiza Masamba,

Voici le communique:
We the citizens of DRC resident in Zimbabwe would like to make a statement concerning the
cutting off of electricity and water supply in Kinshasa and the surrounding areas.
These facilities are the most basic needs of any urban community.
We would like to highlight the effect of the above actions on the innocent people of
Kinshasa and the surrounding areas which have a total population of 8000000.
The effects on the functioning of the hospitals are catastrophic:
a. Surgical interventions are not possible if there is no electricity
and water.
b. Babies cannot be safely delivered where those facilities are not
available; the risk of infection is high.
c. Premature babies cannot be adequately attended to because incubators
need electricity to function.
d. Intensive care units have ceased to function and patients have died
because of this act.
e. Essential drugs such as vaccines and insulin have become unusable as
they have to be kept refrigerated. One is horrified to imagine what is happening to
diabetic patients.
f. Virtually all blood products used in hospitals have to stay
refrigerated. Obviously such facilities are no longer functional in Kinshasa.
Apart from hospitals, refuse collection is no longer possible. There is potential of real
epidemic diseases.
In an area of 8000000 souls with non functioning traffic lights, accidents are on the
increase, this is going to further overbuden the system which had already been dilapidated
by three decades of mismanagement.
Even humanitarian organisations will not be able to execute their help in such
circumstances.
We joined the rest of the world in condemning the recent bombing in Nairobi and
Dar-es-Salam. We therefore find the silence by the same world on the cutting off of
electricity in Kinshasa very disturbing, given the grave consequences of such
irresponsible behaviour.
In view of what is said above, what sort of "liberation" are we expecting from
the perpetrators of such acts and their allies? Is this an act of "redemption"
or "terrorism"?
